The portraits by JIAYI ZHAO are characterized by their universal intensity. It’s not a specific individual that takes center stage, but rather a human condition such as birth or old age. The painting “Future” shows us a person at the beginning of their life, where little is predefined. The baby emerges from darkness into light. The contours are still blurred, but the expression is already clearly visible. Movement and the flow of time define the work. In old age, it’s similar but reversed: the contours are already beginning to dissolve.
